HISTORY · BEFORE THE OTTOMAN CITIES

Medieval Bosnia: fortresses and stećci

Ruined walls on a ridge and carved stones in a field ask for a different kind of looking. Bosnia’s medieval sites reward a little context before you arrive: who used the place, what survives and how it fits into the landscape around it.

Bobovac and the royal landscape

Bobovac was a seat of Bosnia's medieval rulers. Its connection with Kraljeva Sutjeska makes this a rewarding focus for a history-led outing. Read a little of that story before you arrive, then plan the actual approach around the current walking conditions and the pace of your group.

Look closely at the stećci

Stećci are medieval tombstones found across the region. Selected graveyards form a shared UNESCO World Heritage property across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia. Shapes, reliefs and inscriptions vary, so choose a particular site and learn its story rather than assuming every stone has the same meaning or belongs to one community.

Choose a graveyard that fits the route

Radimlja and Boljuni, both near Stolac, are among the inscribed components; Dugo polje at Blidinje belongs to a different landscape. These can anchor quite different days. Treat the sites as burial places: keep off the stones and leave the carvings undisturbed.

Separate the chapters at Blagaj

Blagaj's hilltop fortress and the tekke beside the Buna spring belong to different historical chapters. The later Ottoman-era religious site offers a very different visit from the fortress above. Plan each as its own stop, especially if you want to make the hilltop approach rather than stay beside the river.
