What to see in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Start with the days you would enjoy, not a list you feel obliged to complete. City life, river country and high mountains belong to different parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. These are starting points for a route, with fuller guides when a place catches your interest.

IN THIS CHAPTER

Read at your own pace. Take the ideas that fit your trip, and leave room for your own route.

For city streets and time at the table

Begin with Sarajevo for Baščaršija, craft streets and museums. Mostar and nearby Blagaj give a different shape to a heritage-led journey: the Neretva, stone lanes and the Buna spring. Choose time in each place rather than treating the two cities as interchangeable stops.

For waterfalls and river country

The Una region in the northwest centres a trip on river scenery, with separate waterfall visitor areas at Štrbački Buk and Martin Brod. Around Konjic, an upper-Neretva outing is a different regional choice. Choose the river landscape that fits the part of the country you want to explore.

For a day above the everyday

Bjelašnica and the Lukomir landscape can bring highland scenery into a Sarajevo-based plan when the season and access allow. Sutjeska and Zelengora deserve their own mountain planning. Pick a walk by distance, climbing and terrain, not by how dramatic its summit looks online.

For a journey led by history

The Višegrad bridge, medieval stećci graveyards and the architecture of Sarajevo offer different ways into the country’s past. Choose a period or a question you want to understand. Memorial visits need their own time and context, rather than being squeezed between scenic stops.

Turn the shortlist into a route

Pick two or three priorities, add your available nights and tell us where you will start and finish. Include the kind of days your group prefers: easy-going, active or mixed. The aim is a trip you have time to experience, not the longest possible list.
